Blues Legends United: An Evening with Al Cook at the Louisiana Blues Pub
On 19 July 2024, the time had come once again: A special concert evening at the legendary Louisiana Blues Pub in Vienna was about to take place. This venue has a rich history, and numerous renowned artists have already rocked the stage here. Icons like Hans Theessink, Dana Gillespie, and Erik Trauner have left their mark on the pub, making it a mecca for blues fans. I always love playing at the “Louisi,” as we affectionately call it, and I look forward to visiting Vienna every time. It’s always a wonderful opportunity to meet friends and acquaintances and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the pub. This time, there were four of us on stage: Together with Peter Müller on drums, a true master of his craft. Peter has had an impressive career, having played with the Mojo Blues Band, among others, and is known for his precise and powerful style. Karol Hodas on bass, whose groovy yet sensitive playing style makes him a sought-after musician in the blues and jazz scene. He has already collaborated with numerous international artists and always brings a special dynamic to every band he plays in. Tom Mitterlechner, a long-standing member of my band, whose guitar riffs and solos never fail to captivate the audience. With his virtuosity and stage presence, he is an indispensable part of our sound. The journey was originally planned to be a leisurely train ride, but due to a system failure, all trains were significantly delayed. Out of necessity, we decided to take the car. I picked up Tom, and together we embarked on the five-hour drive to Vienna. We arrived literally at the last minute – ten minutes before the performance – and just managed to set up our instruments. Despite the stressful start, it was a special concert for us. For one, blues legend Al Cook had come to hear us. Al Cook is a blues icon, known for his authentic interpretations and his long-standing career, which has made him one of the most respected blues musicians in Europe. Additionally, my CDs were ready for collection, which I recorded in April for my 10th stage anniversary in Vienna at Styx Records. Peter Müller ceremoniously handed me the CDs, and I was able to present a copy to Al Cook right away. The performance at the Louisi was divided into two sets with a short break. Al sat in the front row for the entire concert, listened to the music, and even played along with us. He impressed with powerful vocals and an authentic blues style, bringing the audience to cheer and adding an unforgettable touch to the evening. Towards the end of the evening, he requested the “Suitcase Blues” from us, which we naturally played for him with the band. At the end of this song, Al Cook stood up and applauded – a moment I will never forget. Standing ovations from a true blues legend – what an honour! After only three hours of sleep, we set off back to Innsbruck the next day. My little daughter Julie was already eagerly waiting for me. Despite the short night, it was a great trip and an unforgettable concert. The evening at the Louisiana Blues Pub will remain in my memory for a long time. It was another chapter in the wonderful history of this special place and a highlight of my musical career.
